The SafeHouse Arts Space Gallery was opened by Community Visual Images at 25 Donegall Street on August 7th 2002. Conceived as a new artspace in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, Safehouse aimed to provide a small, accessible, open, inviting, art gallery which would nurture new emerging art as well as challenging some of the establishing artistic norms.
Unfunded, except by small grants from managed artspace owners Laganside, Safehouse sees itself as different from other Galleries in Belfast. Probably the only independent Gallery in the City, Safehouse embodies an Artist’s collective who plan future Exhibitions and installations.
Preserving the history and integrity of a Victorian city centre the building (25, Donegall St) was Belfast’s first “lying in hospital” which opened in 1794 and later moved to what is now the Royal Belfast Maternity Hospital. It was also a factory where Belfast people of all traditions worked together and earlier babies of all traditions first saw the light of day!
CVI is a registered charity, No. XR30355
